After obtaining her medical degree in 1978 at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Dr. Birkholz pursued her training in Family Medicine at Phoenix Baptist Hospital, and eventually completed a fellowship in Faculty Development from the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona.

She stayed on as a faculty member at the Phoenix Baptist Family Medicine Program and was interim director there before she left for private practice in 1988. Starting in solo practice, she developed Your Family Physician, now near the Arrowhead Hospital campus.

Dr. Birkholz has been active in organized medicine: Past president of the Arizona Academy of Family Medicine, Board member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Executive Committee member of the Arizona Medical Association, and has been active on many state and national committees.

At the community level, her efforts are directed primarily in the areas of Maternal/Child and Adolescent Health, and Underserved Populations. She was the founding president of the Maricopa Area Health Education Center, past president of the Institute of Health Professions Education and is now the Medical Director of the Arizona Collaborative for Adolescent Health.  She has been chair or member of numerous educational, public health and hospital staff committees. She is also currently on the Board of Trustees of Arrowhead Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Birkholz has a son, Gabriel, who is a student at Arizona State University, and a daughter, Siri, who is a Yoga instructor and performing artist and choreographer in professional dance in New York City.
